Guest blogger!

Hey there

Sarah and Tippy here:
_MG_0429.JPG

Let me introduce Amy, who's going to be blogging today...

Hi everyone

amyblog.jpg

My name is Amy and I’ve been helping out at H+P for two weeks on work experience but, sadly, it is my last day today! I have had lots of fun though and I have had learnt a lot of new things so I’d like to thank Sarah and the team for having me.

Before I go though, I thought you all should know about the British Horse Society’s ‘Ragwort Awareness Week’.

Ragwort is a very poisonous plant and is extremely dangerous for horses to eat, so the BHS are urging people to stop it spreading by organising Ragwort Pulling Parties to remove it from all fields.

The BHS can provide posters and advice about the dangers of ragwort (it can be found dried in hay, so watch out!). Lee Hackett from the BHS said “every year the BHS receive hundreds of calls and emails from concerned horse owners requiring advice on how to control ragwort”.

If you are going to get pulling, it is advised that you wear thick, waterproof gloves to protect your skin, and it is also sensible to wear a facemask.

Ragwort Awareness Week runs from April 14-20, 2008. For more information check out the BHS website or contact r.molloy@bhs.org.uk.

Jumping for charity

Hey everyone

Jennie here:jennie.jpg

Just to let you know there's an Open Cross Country competition, including an interschool challenge and clear round showjumping class, taking place on May 29 at Home Farm, Alconbury, Huntingdon.

It’s all in aid of the charity Independent Age. The charity supports older people on low incomes who have made a contribution to their society in some way.

Riders as young as eight years old can enter the Novice class. By doing so, you stand a chance of winning a year's subscription to H+P too!

A birthday treat

Hey guys

Laura and Thomas here: newlaura.jpg

Another busy weekend for me last weekend, as a present for my birthday I went to Rome which was just great, and not liking to be away from horses for too long I managed to find some whilst I was there.

All over Rome there were people offering carriage rides to tourists, and unlike some other countries, all the working horses were in really good condition – which was great to see. There was a particularly nice horse in the Piazza Navona (a really pretty town square) who looked to be on his lunch break munching on his oats out of his nose bag! You see, wherever you go there are always horses!

Badminton count down

Welcome to Georgie Spence's next monthly diary installment. Georgie (19) is an eventer and is based near Chippenham, Wiltshire. She is currently on the World Class Start Programme for future potential Olympic British team prospects. She was a member of the gold medal - winning team at the Young Rider Europeans at Blair Castle in 2007 and received an award from British Eventing for being the rider under 21 years of age gaining the most points in 2007. In 2008 she is aiming to compete in her first 4* event.

Georgie writes:
At last the event season has started and I am very pleased with how the horses are coping, especially the youngsters. It has also been another very hectic month!

The first event was Stilemans and we took Song for Gull (Gully), Trenear (Trin), Skylight (Kiki) and Downleadon (Minx). Gully and Trin were both excited to be out, but a little rusty after the winter, and Minx didn’t feel her normal self so we withdrew her after the cross country. Kiki was super. She did a 30.5 dressage test, jumped double clear and won, so I was delighted.

trenear.jpg
Trenear (Trin) was a little excitable on his first outing of the year.

The next event was Tweseldown where I had six horses to ride. It was Sophie’s first outing and she was very wobbly and green. She stopped at the first showjump but then flew round. We had two down but I was delighted with her performance. Running Brook went superbly in the Open Intermediate, and Kiki pulled out the stops again and came 3rd in the Open Novice. Gully jumped a great double clear and finished 7th and Daisy came 5th in the Open. Trin jumped really well, but we didn’t quite jump the right side of the flag at the first corner fence in the cross country and so were eliminated for error on course.

Aldon was extremely muddy to say the least, but the horses still jumped amazingly with Gull and Tom placed 4th and 5th in their classes. Gatcombe was cancelled so we took the youngsters to Munstead to do the Open Intro.

Henry was very excitable and kept looking around at everything. Ollie was awesome and lots of people commented on how nice he is and we finished in 10th. Both he and Henry jumped perfect cross country rounds so I was thrilled with them.

Had another good day at Somerley and finished 4th on Tom, 6th on Running Brook and was delighted to win the Under 21 prize for the second year running. We also had good result at Portman and Henry really came into his own with a 34 test and a double clear. He was amazing – I can’t believe how confident he is for a five-year-old!

Goring was also cancelled so we finished off the month at Portman, where I competed on Ollie and Sophie and went round hors concours (non competitively) on Hamish and a new ride, Neremptah, who is owned by Eugenia Chapman Campbell.

Ollie and Sophie finished in 4th and 5th and the other two would have won had we not been hors concours, so it was another good day.

Georgie is hoping to ride Running Brook II at Badminton.

I am now waiting nervously in hope that I will be able to take Running Brook II to Badminton. This will be our first 4* event but with record entries this year, we are in 8th place on the waiting list. The first four riders have been accepted and so we just need four more horses to be withdrawn to allow our entry to go through. Fingers and toes are crossed!

It's Tippy's birthday!

Hi everyone

Sarah and Tippy here:
_MG_0429.JPG

Another year has come round again - and it's Tippy's birthday today! She's officially 21 today. I can't believe where the time goes. She was only three when I first met her.

We're having a bit of a party tonight to celebrate; singing Happy Birthday in the field and munching carrot cake.

I've still got to get her a birthday pressie. I really don't know what to get. I mean, what do you get a 21-year-old pony who has everything. She's already got umpteen rugs, headcollars, bridles, brushes... there really is nothing new she needs.

PS Thanks to everyone who's sent her a card and especially Sophie Lear, from South Wales who sent her a feed voucher. Sophie won the voucher in a competition but doesn't have a pony of her own so thought Tippy would appreciate it.

On your marks…

Hi everyone

Jennie here:jennie.jpg

Tippy's big day

Hi everyone

Sarah and Tippy here:
_MG_0429.JPG

Tippy's birthday went without hitch. The sun shone and she was very happy!

I went to Belton Horse Trials, this last weekend and watched Oliver Townend and the gorgeous Coup de Coeur win his advanced class. He's definitely a horse for my fantasy stables! He's on the start list for Badminton so fingers' crossed.

Flint Curtis is being prepared for the Olympics so is wrapped in cotton wool at the mo!

Find out more about Oliver's horses at his new official site at www.olivertownend.com

A royal subject

Hi everyone

Jennie here:jennie.jpg

The Queen is lending her support to the fight to help one of Britain’s most endangered native breeds!

Four years ago the Suffolk Punch Horse Society gave HM a filly foal named Whitton Poppy who had been bred on a farm in Ipswich. Last May, Poppy gave birth to her own foal. The little chap is called Sandringham Sailor II after a Suffolk Punch who was once owned by Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George VI.

Before World War Two there were more than two million of these beautiful heavy horses in the UK but now there are less than 420 registered. So the Rare Breeds Survival Trust hope that Sailor will become one of the breed's registered stallions.

Thomas is on holiday!

Hi all

Laura and Thomas here: newlaura.jpg

Thomas has packed his suitcase, hoof pick, copy of H+P, his fave treats and skipped off on his holidays to my uncle's field in Northamptonshire. There is lots of grass there for him so he is having a well earned rest after a busy few months. Warhorse and George have gone with him so he won’t be lonely. He does love his trips away. He gets time to put his hooves up and really chill out. I bet when I go to see him this weekend he will have turned wild again and I won’t be able to get near him - it will be September before I can catch him again!

Katie Price presents prizes!

Hi everyone

Sarah and Tippy here:
_MG_0429.JPG

You will never guess who was at the Petplan Equine Area Festival!

Dressage rider Angela Hamp got a surprise at the Petplan Equine Area Festival - Katie Price was on hand to present her with her prizes!

Angela and her horse Di-Conti won the Advanced Medium Open and Medium Open at the Festival and Katie presented her with the Advanced Medium trophy. A keen dressage rider herself, Katie might one day be competing at the Petplan Equine Area Festival herself!

The ninth annual Festival Final was held at Hartpury Arena, Gloucs on April 16-20 and attracted competitors from all over the country.

Katie got a taste of being at a big dressage festival when she presented Angela with her trophy.
